You’re not alone. When I had the AI bot write my blog post a couple of months ago and used AI to produce the video without shooting a custom video blog, the post received more interest and comments than anything I’ve written in 15 years. When Sam Richter and I hosted a webinar on using AI and ChatGPT just a few weeks ago, over 600 people signed up to learn how to put the new to work for them.

Why? Because the new technology appears fearfully magical and something almost everyone feels they need to understand.

In 1963, science fiction author Arthur C. Clark wrote, “Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic.” And even though today’s developments were at least half a century away, Clark could have been talking about the power of AI and ChatGPT.

AI and ChatGPT

From the beginning of recorded history to the early 1800’s Luddites to today’s Neo-Luddites, fear of new technology is nothing new.

In the 1440s, public reaction to the -new printing press was so intense that many superstitious people believed it was the work of the devil.

Johann Gutenberg, the innovator who introduced mechanized printing, was denounced as a German interloper who was driving honest Italian scribes out of work. However, once the Roman Catholic Church understood the practical applications of Gutenberg’s invention, the archbishop of Mainz pensioned the inventor, awarding him grain, wine, and clothing, and granting him tax-exempt status.

Thinking of that while I watch people’s over-the-top reactions to AI and the power of AI and ChatGPT, I can’t help but hear Berra quipping, “It’s déjà vu all over again.”

City, Los Angeles, Seattle, and Baltimore systems have banned ChatGPT. So have schools in Western Australia, New South Wales, Queensland, Tasmania, and loads of places in between.

And it’s not just primary education. Colleges and universities worldwide, in , India, and other places, have banned AI and ChatGPT research tools.

While discussing the ins and outs of AI’s importance and implications would require more space than this blog (or your attention span) could stand, the conclusion is simple. Like other earth-shattering innovations, AI is not going away. The way to benefit is not to run from it or to ostrich your head in the sand, but to embrace change and discover how you can use the power of ChatGPT to improve your business and your life.
